Well Child Examination

What is a Well Child Examination?
A Well Child Examination is a routine check-up to assess a child's growth, development, and overall health. These appointments also include age-appropriate immunizations and provide an opportunity to address any concerns about your child's health and development.
How often should my child have a Well Child Examination?
It's recommended that infants and toddlers have more frequent check-ups due to the rapid changes they experience in early life. As children age, these visits may become annual. However, Dr. Omar Afandi or our team will provide specific guidance tailored to your child's unique needs.
What can I expect during a Well Child Examination?
Our team will record your child's height, weight, and other pertinent developmental milestones during the visit. We'll also administer any necessary vaccinations, perform a physical examination, and discuss any concerns or questions you might have.
Should I prepare anything for the examination?
It's helpful to come with any questions or concerns you might have. If your child is on any medication or if there have been any significant changes in their health or behavior, please let us know.
Are vaccinations part of the Well Child Examination?
Yes, age-appropriate immunizations are a vital component of many Well Child Examinations. We adhere to the recommended immunization schedule but are always available to discuss any concerns you might have about vaccines.

Circumcision

At what age do you perform circumcisions?
We currently perform circumcisions to infants up to 1 year of age. We are in the process of getting approved to perform circumcisions to infants older than one, which is done under sedation in an approved level 2 OHP Facility. Please check back with us a few months if your child is older than one year of age.
What is the best age to perform a circumcision?
While circumcisions can be done at any age, it is best if they are done in the first 2 weeks of life.
What method of newborn circumcision do you perform at WE Kidz Pediatrics?
While Dr. Afandi is able to perform circumcisions utilizing both Mogen clamp and plastibell methods, he prefers the plastibell method. If you prefer he circumcises your child using the mogen clamp, please let our office know.
Is anesthesia used during the procedure?

We ask that you give a dose of tylenol 30 minutes before the scheduled procedure time. In addition, we use local anesthesia to ensure the comfort and safety of your child.

What is the plastibell (ring) circumcision technique?

The plastibell method is usually used with young infants and toddlers. After giving the local anaesthetic, the foreskin is separated from the head of the penis (glans). A plastic ring fits around the head of the penis (glans) and the foreskin is pulled over the ring.

A thread is then tied on the skin. This thread will cut the blood supply from the foreskin which will eventually die and fall off with the ring usually within 3-14 days. It is very similar to the umbilical cord which eventually dies and falls off.

Dr. Afandi prefers using the plastibell method as it allows for complete visualization of the glans and forskin for the thread is tied.

Are there any risks associated with circumcision?
As with any medical procedure, there are risks, but complications are rare. We discuss all potential risks with parents beforehand.
How much does circumcision cost at WE Kidz Pediatrics?

Unfortunately, OHIP doesn't cover routine circumcisions so parents have to pay for the service.

For newborns up to 8 weeks of age, our circumcision rate is $350, which increases by $50 per additional month of life until 12 months of age. For a 6 month old it would cost $600 and for a 12 month old it would cost $900.

How long is the recovery time after circumcision?

Most babies recover within 7 to 10 days, but it's essential to follow post-procedure care instructions.
